Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GPS module for each node?

No. A luminaire never moves during its service life, so its position is set once, at installation, and a GPS module adds nothing afterward — it cannot even help confirm a theft, since it loses power and RF range once removed. Installation itself is done by scanning the node and running a full functional test from the bucket truck, confirming everything works before the crew leaves, rather than relying on GPS-based auto-commissioning. Beyond that, GPS adds cost, an extra point of failure, continuous 24/7 power draw, and the time needed to acquire a fix on power-up. If you still want a GPS-equipped module, it's available as an option — just specify it when ordering.

Do you use gateway devices, and how do they connect?

It depends on the radio technology chosen. Some nodes communicate directly with a cellular tower; others communicate through a local gateway. Node-to-gateway data logging and scheduling uses a Dimonoff protocol built on IEEE 802.15.4 (2.4 GHz or 900 MHz) and encrypted with 128- or 256-bit AES, above the standard. Gateway-to-server backhaul is Ethernet or cellular.

Can a gateway be a single point of failure?

Yes — a gateway's pole can, for example, be struck by a vehicle. That's why the system has several fail-safe and fallback layers to stay operational while a crew repairs or replaces it, including the ability to transfer every node in an affected zone to a neighboring gateway within seconds, and back again once it's fixed.

Is your system fixture-agnostic?

Yes — it works with any manufacturer’s fixture, provided it has a 0-10V or DALI dimmable driver and an ANSI C136.41 or Zhaga Book 18 socket for RME twist-lock installation, or takes an RTM module mounted inside the fixture. Dimonoff has OEM agreements with most major fixture manufacturers. RME is also compatible with ANSI C136.41 5-pin and ANSI C136.10 3-pin receptacles, without light-level control.

Do I need more than one component to control and monitor light level?

No — each relay (node) includes everything in a single module.

What are the MTBF and rated life of your modules?

Per Telcordia SR-332: at 25°C, MTBF is 4,953,260 hours (565 years), for a rated life of 175,200 hours (20 years) and a 3.98% probability of failure within that 20-year life. At 40°C, MTBF is 3,566,192 hours, the same 175,200-hour rated life, with a 5.83% failure probability over 20 years.

Which network topology do you use?

Several options, depending on the radio network you prefer: mesh, LoRa or cellular. The mesh topology is a flooding approach, originally developed by DARPA for the US Army for high reliability — every radio receives and re-transmits each message until a time or hop-count limit is reached, rather than following one fixed, coordinator-assigned route the way Zigbee's routing does.

Is the system hosted by the customer or by Dimonoff?

Either. The Dimonoff | SCMS platform can run on the client’s own servers, on the cloud (client-managed or Dimonoff-managed), or as SaaS. The Central Management Server handles data acquisition synchronized with gateways, configuration, reporting, and serves the web and mobile access applications.

Is the power metering accurate, and is it certified?

It is utility-grade, better than ±0.5% accuracy, with every device individually calibrated in-plant during quality control.

Do you offer a trial of the system?

Yes — real-time access to a recently deployed large-scale project can be arranged, along with interviews with the managers running it.

What light-level control signal do you offer?

Industry-standard 0-10V and DALI, both source and sink, with 1024 dimming steps for smooth ramping and 10 programmable levels with delayed timing and scheduling. Additional parameters cover minimum lamp burn time (to respect fixture warranties), minimum/maximum dimming percentage, a low-power demand-response mode, an option to turn off below the minimum dimming level, and a user-programmable transition time from 0% to 100% of up to 65,535 seconds.

Are the controllers installed inside or outside the luminaire?

Both options exist, to match your fixture. RTM’s small footprint fits inside the fixture enclosure, well suited to decorative styles. RME mounts externally via a NEMA C136.41 5- or 7-terminal twist-lock receptacle for power and dimming control, or can be installed in a NEMA 4X box and mounted remotely.

How difficult is it to install the metering device on HID lights?

The external C136.41 module is fully compatible with the older C136.10 3-prong photocell socket, so installation is the same as replacing a damaged photocell. The node’s barcode is scanned at installation time to geolocate the fixture.

Is there a difference between a gateway, a collector and a router?

No, they’re the same thing: per IES TM-23-11, a device that interfaces between two communication networks using different protocols (for example BACnet to DALI), typically translating a wireless field-device protocol to a standard wide-area network protocol such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular LTE.

Is there a difference between a relay, a module, a node and a controller?

No, also the same thing: per IES TM-23-11, the device that physically monitors and controls luminaires at each control point, responds to inputs, makes control decisions through its own logic, and communicates over the network.

Can you provide an API for integration with other systems?

Yes — the system uses industry-standard REST APIs for data exchange, and our team assists with any integration.

Is your software web-based only?

No — you can use Dimonoff’s desktop application or the web-based application, whichever suits your team.

Do you offer training, onsite and remote?

Yes, tailored to your team, onsite or remote, with refresher sessions available by webinar.

What type of support is provided?

A North America-based team, in English, French and Spanish, with ticket management built into Dimonoff | SCMS. Response targets during support hours (Eastern Time): under 30 minutes for urgent tickets, under 4 hours for important tickets, and within 24 hours for the rest.

Can you help me calculate my return on investment?

Yes — send us your fixture count, kW/kWh figures and the components of your electricity rate (customer, distribution, transmission, admin and market-service charges, taxes), and we’ll run a complete ROI analysis.

Is your communication secure, and how?

Every over-the-air transmission is encrypted (IEEE 802.15.4 secured mesh, 128- or 256-bit AES). Source and destination IP addresses are never sent unencrypted, and TCP/IP packets are never transmitted whole. Dimonoff’s own command-set protocol serializes every node individually, with additional security layered in as groups and scenarios are defined.

Does your software support plan include updates?

Yes.

How many nodes can a gateway handle?

It depends on the radio network selected — for example, up to 1,000 nodes on Digi 2.4 GHz/900 MHz hardware. Dimonoff recommends an average ratio of 500 nodes per gateway for fast data collection and headroom for growth.

Describe the system’s energy management capability.

Every node has a built-in demand-response load-shedding function with up to 10 priority levels.
