Laval selects Dimonoff for its streetlight conversion project

The City of Laval approved a 3-year, $34.5 million project to convert 37,000 street light fixtures to LED with a smart control system, with Dimonoff and Pierre Brossard Ltée as the selected implementers.

The City of Laval approved a project to convert 37,000 street light fixtures to LED luminaires with smart controls. Dimonoff and Pierre Brossard Ltée were selected to implement the initiative over three years, with a $34.5 million investment. Installation began in early March 2021, with full conversion expected within 12 to 18 months, running through the rest of 2021 and the first half of 2022; a second phase will later cover decorative and architectural lighting.

The project is projected to generate annual savings exceeding $2.75 million, mainly from reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs, including roughly 15 million kWh of annual electricity savings and a return on investment within about 5 years. It supports Laval’s “Urban by Nature” sustainability strategy, with an estimated annual greenhouse-gas reduction of 10,607 tCO2 over the system’s 25-year lifespan. The deployment includes 37,000 intelligent lighting controllers managed through 88 gateways on the Dimonoff | SCMS platform.

“This project comes at a good time: a significant portion of the lighting network has reached end of life,” said Marc Demers, Mayor of Laval. Bernard Têtu, CEO of Dimonoff, noted that the Dimonoff | SCMS platform would allow the city to integrate mobility and security devices into a single interface as needs evolve.
